In science, we have begun to look at Waste in Our World (Grade 4) and looking at different types of pollution. Water pollution is an area that we want to focus on, especially exploring how water is cleaned. We discovered that wetlands are nature's way of cleaning water, and will be tying that into our Wetlands unit for Grade 5s. On Halloween Day, we will be having a Safety Assembly at 1:30 pm. Parents are welcome to come! Halloween Dress Code for Costumes: - No masks, no weapons, no blood - Costumes can only be worn after lunch. In Science we have just finished Weather (Grade 5) and Light and Shadows (Grade 4) which culminated in a science test. We are looking forward to starting a combined Wetlands and Waste in Our World unit starting on Monday. This month, we have been exploring poetry techniques such as alliteration and descriptive language as we wrote poetry on the season of Autumn. Today was the first day of "Follow Your Passion." Students were excited to head off to the programs they had chosen. The first day went well! Students in Rooms 6 and 8 have been learning about light and shadow, and took tin foil figures that they had made into the sun to trace its shadow. Ask your child what pose their figure is making and how the shadow formed. The Grade 4s also created sun dials to track shadows throughout the day. Meanwhile, the Grade 5s have been learning about weather systems and constructed an anemometer which is used to measure wind speed.
This has been a very busy week at Valley View. On Thursday the whole school participated in the Terry Fox run. There were lots of tired children who should be really proud of their effort. We are hoping to finish Terry run for him by continuing to run a bit each day and adding these laps up over the year.
On Friday, Constable Don was here to talk to the children about safety both in the school and in the community. Following his conversation the school had a practice lockdown situation. |
