At last the weather has turned and we are enjoying the delightful sunshine. Please note, the weather can still get a little cool, so make sure to have layers of clothing for the day.
In Math, the kids have been so busy with Geometry; Art, scavenger hunts, using protractors and compasses....We all know how to talk about shapes and space and identify ATTRIBUTES! Ms. Hallam"s class is working on a comic book about Laura Secord (Yes, the chocolate) and her role in the War of 1812, and the grade 4s are doing hands on research on a variety of topics - the fur trade, Louis Riel, The effect of the fur trade on Aboriginal lives and culture, The Cypress Hills Massacre and a map study of Alberta and the Coureurs du bois. For Science, the 4s are are learning about simple machines and experimenting with making simple machines. Our Grade 5s are doing CHEMISTRY.... things that fizz and pop. So, we're back, but sadly, Spring has not yet sprung. Please be aware of this as you send your children to school. Make sure they're dressed for the weather and have a pair of indoor AND outdoor shoes so we can keep our floors clean. As the snow melts, we're in for some mucky weather.
The Grade 4s will be doing some more work around simple machines. Ribbon or cotton spools and small boxes would be gratefully accepted if you have some for us. This will be a very hands on time! The Grade 5s will be working on Classroom Chemistry. Here are a few websites that will be interesting to look at at home: http://www.chem4kids.com/files/react_intro.html http://www.enchantedlearning.com/physics/reactions.shtml http://www.pkphysicalscience.com/static/games Typical Calgary weather means snow and melt, ice and snow and melt......
Please could you make sure students have the correct clothing, especially footwear. All students should have a pair of indoor AND outdoor shoes that are taken off at the door. The students were so excited for our field trip to the Science Centre. Both classes were extremely engaged in the activity and Ms. Hallam and Ms Lewis are very proud of them!
We participated in making Rube Goldberg machines (Grade 4 Simple Machines) and watched an awesome movie in the Dome Theatre about Extreme Weather (Grade 5 Weather). We came back to school and started journalling about our experiences. Parents are reminded that online booking is open for the March 22 and 23 parent conferences. Looking forward to seeing you there!
Recently students visited Heritage Park where they saw what life was like in Alberta 100-150 years ago. They explored trains, cars, simple machines and ranch houses. Some even got to eat some homemade butter. A favorite activity was the assembly line where students worked together to build a car. While visiting the horses and donkey students were lucky enough to see 5 coyotes crossing the field. In all, it was a great day and students continue to make connections to what they learned there.
Our Grade 5 students are starting to get excited for Outdoor School in May. A note went home to parents about the mandatory parent meeting on March 8, 2018 at school. Please read it and bring all you questions to the meeting.
This is a fun and challenging learning opportunity, where students learn new skills, get LOTS of exercise and eat delicious meals. They will be following the Sunship Earth program, learning about the environment and environmental stewardship. THEY WILL COME HOME TIRED, DIRTY AND HAPPY! We are very busy at school. In Math, we have started a fun project called "Build a Tiny House."
Using Measurement of Area and Perimeter and 2D and 3D geometry, we are designing and building Tiny Houses. WE have watched a TED talk about why a couple chose to live in a tiny house and how this is benefitting their environmental footprint. We will be writing a persuasive letter to the mayor to motivate for greater government support for tiny houses. In Social studies, the Grade 5s have been working hard on their explorer projects and the L:earning Commons has been a hive of activity! Students have produced excellent artefacts and research and are now presenting their work to the group. The Grade 4s are working with Ms Lewis and Ms Stoesz on the history of Alberta using a First Nations perspective. Our Scientists have been building with recycled materials (grade 4 - Waste in Our World) and exploring electricity (Grade 5.) Be Brave Anti Bullying Hockey Game
Students in room 6 and 8 were fortunate to go to the Be Brave Anti Bullying Hockey Game with Calgary Hitmen vs Swift Current Broncos. All students received a pink Be Brave T shirt that they wore to the game. It was amazing to see the sea of pink at the game. The next day students again wore their pink shirts on the official PINK SHIRT DAY.
